Why do humans have armpit hair?

We've lost most of our fur, so why do we still have it under our arms? It doesn't seem to serve any evolutionary purpose...

Why do humans have armpit hair?

it is said it is for the same reason humans have retained pubic hair. whats that? for spreading scent. before deoderants, even before french perfume, that the scent attracted mates. why are some men bald you might ask. most major traits evolved for a good reason. armpit hair and pubic once served as a signal for identification, baldness is an advantage for men wearing helments as they often did for centuries. they could endure the heat of battle which they engaged in quite often. many athletes have found the advantage and shave their heads. it feels cool.

Why do humans have armpit hair?

for sweat to accumulate and cool us down. as in any other hairy parts

Why do humans have armpit hair?

It's linked to puberty, therefore scientists believe it may have served a sexual purpose in releasing pheromones to attract the opposite sex.

In Western culture it's acceptable for men to have body hair including armpit hair, but not women.

For expensive paint brushes first developed for cave art.

Why do humans have armpit hair?

It may help spread our "scent" around, and probably cuts down on skin friction at the major joints, but the really interesting question is about how evolution has done this. Why does testosterone lead to men having hairy faces, but not women. That doesn't seem to be for any specific reason does it.

Back to armpits though. I guess that when we used to need hair for warmth, it grew thicker around the main joints (because it had to resist the friction and not fall out) and so now that we're wearing clothes it's the last to go. It was the toughest we had growing on us in the first place so it's stayed with us the longest.

I think that's probably the answer, but it's still a bit weird about the beards though. Maybe because guys are and always have been so visual, and so needed to see their mate's facial features back when we were evolving?

Why do humans have armpit hair?

So when we lift our arms, we can look like we have Buckwheat in a headlock.

Why do humans have armpit hair?

to stop bugs taking up residence and having a ball.

Why do humans have armpit hair?

Areas of the body that tend to be warmer and sweat the most, develop hair...

It's to do with the moisture and nutrients in the sweat and being in dark, enclosed areas, the sweat doesn't evaporate so quickly...It's like a bodily maintained 'Rain Forest',...warm and humid.

(Beards and other 'Man' hair is due to male hormones).

Why do humans have armpit hair?
